Directly after reading Life of Pi over the summer, I sadly did not have any deep meaningful epiphanies right away, I just thought that it was a fairly disturbing story about a boy and some animals. I have a lack of specific preexisting knowledge about religions, so that made understanding the importance of God in Pi's life difficult at first. However, it soon became clear that his passion for all three religions kept him sane through his journey. This unit helped me understand symbols more, and how to recognize them. I also learned about the importance of stories, and how they can keep our sanity, and be better than the "dry, yeastless factuality" (Martel 63). This unit helped me figure out why people tell stories, and how religion can help people through difficult times when reality may be too hard to bear on its own.
